The exhaust system of a vehicle is an integral part that directs harmful gases away from the vehicle, reduces noise from the engine's exhaust gases, and helps to maintain good fuel efficiency by monitoring and controlling emissions. This system mainly comprises four elements: an exhaust manifold, a catalytic converter, an oxygen sensor, and a silencer (also known as a muffler).
When working properly, the exhaust manifold collects gases from the engine’s cylinders and directs them into one pipe towards the catalytic converter. The catalytic converter reduces harmful substances in these gases (like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and hydrocarbons) into less harmful substances (like water vapor, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide). The oxygen sensor measures how much oxygen is in your exhaust to ensure there's enough to interact with fuel. Lastly, the silencer, or muffler, reduces noise produced during the expulsion of these gases.
Several signs can indicate issues with your vehicle's exhaust system. An increase in engine noise may be a symptom of a hole in your exhaust pipe or muffler. If you notice decreased power or a decrease in gas mileage, it might be due to an issue with your car’s oxygen sensors or catalytic converter working inefficiently. A strong smell of gas inside or outside of your car can also be an indicator that your car’s exhaust is leaking.
Besides being noisy and unpleasant to deal with on daily commutes, a malfunctioning exhaust system can lead to larger mechanical issues down the road if left unchecked. More importantly it could expose you or your passengers to dangerous gases if not properly vented out through your car’s tailpipe.
For these reasons, we encourage drivers to bring their vehicles to our auto repair shop for any signs of trouble with their exhaust systems.
